This week’s guest on Sex Out Loud is Lisa Vandever: a producer and consultant with over twenty years of experience in film and television. She seized the unique opportunity to combine two of her overriding fixations, film and sexuality. Founded in 2003, CineKink recognizes and encourages the positive depiction of sexuality and kink in film and television, most visibly through its annual film festival, CineKink NYC. We’ll discuss media representations of alternative sexuality, visual depictions of kink, and the intersections of film and sexuality.

This week’s show is LIVE. Find out all the ways to listen here so you can call in with questions and comments at 1-866-472-5788, join the discussion on Facebook or Twitter, or e-mail me via tristan(at)puckerup.com and I’ll read them live on the air.

As co-founder and director of CineKink, an organization that recognizes and encourages the positive depiction of sexuality in film and television, Lisa Vandever curates and oversees an annual film festival and touring series, designed to promote and showcase such works. Billing itself as “the kinky film festival,” with offerings drawn from both the independent cinema world and the adult, works presented at CineKink, currently in its eleventh season, range from documentary to drama, comedy to experimental, slightly spicy to quite explicit–and everything in between. A producer and consultant with over twenty years of experience in film and television, Vandever was formerly the director of programming for a regional network of public television stations, worked as a development executive for two New York-based independent production companies and was associate producer of the Sundance award-winning feature film, “Songcatcher.”

Seizing the unique opportunity to combine two of her overriding fixations, film and sexuality, Vandever previously co-founded the New York S/M Film Festival, which ran 2000-2002. Over the years she has also consulted with media distributors on how to best reach sexuality communities, and has advised filmmakers on how to present their works to a wider market. In addition to serving on the board of directors of the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom, she also volunteered on its media committee, alerting community members to media presentations of alternative sexuality, and encouraging feedback. She has spoken several times on the intersection of film and sexuality at the prestigious SXSW conference, with additional appearances including the International Film Festival Summit, Film Festival Academy, DIY Convention, Sex 2.0, MomentumCon, CatyalystCon and Leather Leadership Conference. She is proud to have once stumped the panel as a guest during a round of “What’s My Fetish?” on the Radio Chick Show …and she probably watches a lot less porn than everyone seems to think she does.

Her sultry short stories have appeared in more than 100 anthologies including Sex for America, Liaisons, and Bedding Down. In all things important, she remains faithful to her partner of 17 years, but she still can’t choose just one perfume. Find her 24/7 at alisontyler.blogspot.com.

About Self Serve:
Self Serve is a woman-owned sexuality resource center & boutique. In a culture where sex is sensationalized and unrealistically represented in the media, and silenced in day-to-day life, we offer a space that is frank, honest and friendly. Our compassionate and non-judgmental sex educators give you the space to ask the questions that make other people blush. Self Serve offers bodysafe adult toys, intimate lubricants, natural skin care, locally-made gifts, books, dvds, classes and private events. We support healthy sexuality over a lifetime, and hope to help people find more pleasure and joy in life.
About Pornotopia Film Festival:
Pornotopia is a film festival celebrating the beauty and diversity of sexuality. Imagine a world where erotic films don’t offend, but arouse. Where orgasms are real and filmmakers are independent. Pornotopia showcases films that keep it real, raw, tender and beautiful. In Pornotopia sex is fun, everyone gets off and pleasure is paramount. Pornotopia Film Festival enjoyed three wonderful years, from 2007 to 2009. In 2010, Self Serve & a community committee planned another exciting erotic film festival. It was sadly never to be. But now… they’re back! After a victorious ruling by the NM State Supreme Court, they are again able to produce the sexiest, most fun film festival in the Southwest.

DixieDeLaTour.Bawdy

This Friday on Sex Out Loud, your ears are in for a special treat: Dixie De La Tour brings us sexy stories about sexy stories! Bawdy Storytelling – dubbed “The Moth for Pervs” by the LA Weekly – is the Nation’s Original Sex+Storytelling series. Founded, Emcee’ed and Curated by Dixie De La Tour, Bawdy features Real people & Rockstars sharing their Bona Fide Sexual Exploits in 10 minutes or less. For the past (almost) 7 years, Bawdy Storytelling’s one-of-a-kind approach to sexpositive personal narrative has coaxed liberating tales out of everyday people, creating unforgettable experiences for performers and audiences alike. We’ll talk to Dixie about how the event came into being and hear exclusive excerpts from a live performance.

Sexual Folklorist Dixie De La Tour founded Bawdy Storytelling, (the Nation’s Original sex and storytelling series featuring Real People & Rockstars) almost 7 years ago as a way to encourage real connection in San Francisco’s sexual underground. All in all, she’s been welcoming newcomers to San Francisco’s sexual underground for over 15 years (De La Tour, as in Tour Guide) – from creating, producing, volunteering for and managing sex positive events, to producing private parties, to teaching workshops, writing about sex & dating, community managing adult dating sites and much more. Dixie hopes to build Bawdy Storytelling into a national event because sexpositive community starts with a personal story; Storytelling makes sex education fun and entertaining and makes it a little harder to judge other people for their choices – listening to just one person’s story can start you down the road to empathy and acceptance for the ‘other.’

The Bawdy Events ‘trifecta’ includes Bawdy Storytelling (the curated mainstage storytelling event which features a different theme for each show) and Dixie also produces BawdySlam (a monthly story slam/competition in San Francisco & Los Angeles, with pervy prizes and the opportunity to compete in the Bawdy GrandSlam – that’s coming up in late October in SF and coming soon in LA) and she’s about to launch BawdyTalks (an sexuality-based event like TEDTalks). She also teaches workshops like Fearless Storytelling & Storytelling for Perverts– both of which feature the unique storytelling method she’s developed to help even the shyest person feel confident (yes, even Dixie had a fear of public speaking in the beginning, & what worked for her has now enabled hundreds of Bawdy Storytellers to face their fears, step onstage & share their sexual journey).

petrajoy-promo-shot

Petra Joy is an award-winning filmmaker, photographer, and journalist who currently lives and works in England and makes “art-core” films from a female perspective. This Friday on Sex Out Loud at 5pm PT / 8 pm ET, she’ll discuss Sexual Sushi, the first film she produced and directed, as well as Her Porn, a series she began in 2008 to give fellow female directors a place to collect and distribute their work. Petra Joy will also discuss the Joy Awards, her ongoing collaboration with Candida Royalle and the impending launch of Cinema Joy, her own eclectic Video On Demand channel streaming with her own erotic films as well as films by other feminist porn directors whose work she loves.

After graduating in 1990 with an MA in film studies and history, Petra Joy worked for almost two decades as a freelance television director producing over 50 documentaries, mostly on (female) sexuality. This work took her to England where she still resides. In 2004, Petra produced and directed her first erotic film, Sexual Sushi . This unique erotic film, featuring a real-life couple and an artistic approach to erotic filmmaking, became a surprise success – even though or because it broke all the mainstream porn rules. Encouraged by this success Petra directed to date four more “art-core” films from a female perspective (Female Fantasies, Feeling it, The Female Voyeur, A Taste of Joy) that won multiple awards all over the world.

Finding similar-minded female directors through festival appearances and networking, Petra began to curate and publish the best-selling Her Porn series in 2008, giving fellow female directors a place to collect and distribute their work that may otherwise have gone unnoticed by many. Encouraged by the idea of promoting existing female directors, as well as wanting to mentor new ones, she created the Petra Joy Awards in 2009, a short film competition for first-time erotic film directors.

Petra continues to make headlines with her autobiographical book The She Pornographer. Female Fantasies: My Revolution Of Lust which was published by Heyne in Germany in June 2012.

Joan_Price headshot high res

This Friday on Sex Out Loud I talk with Joan Price, author, editor, and ageless sexuality advocate. Joan will discuss her book Better Than I Ever Expected which first got her named “the senior sexpert” and her latest book, Naked At Our Age: Talking Out Loud about Senior Sex. We’ll get a sneak preview of her presentation at Catalyst Con in Washington DC in a couple weeks, as well the scoop on the latest anthology she edited, Ageless Erotica, a collection of hot stories where age is no limitation to getting busy.

Joan Price (www.joanprice.com) calls herself an advocate for ageless sexuality, though she has also been dubbed “senior sexpert,” “the beautiful face of senior sex,” and “wrinkly sex kitten” by the media. Joan, age 69, has been writing, speaking, and blogging about senior sex since 2005. Formerly a health & fitness writer, she switched topics to senior sex when she wrote her spicy memoir, Better Than I Ever Expected: Straight Talk about Sex After Sixty, to celebrate the joys of older-age sexuality. Her blog (www.NakedAtOurAge.com) attracted a growing community of sex-positive (and sex-inquisitive) seniors who sent Joan their stories and questions. This led to her next book in 2011: Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud about Senior Sex, a compilation of 130 reader stories, advice from 45 experts, and Joan’s candid commentary. Naked at Our Age won Outstanding Self-Help Book 2012 from the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) and 2012 Book Award from the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, and the audiobook was nominated for an Audie in 2013. She recently edited a steamy senior sex anthology titled Ageless Erotica. Visit Joan’s zesty, award-winning blog about sex and aging at http://www.NakedAtOurAge.com, where Joan continues to talk out loud about Boomer/senior sex, partnered or solo.

Sometimes She Lets Me: Best Butch/Femme Erotica
I am so thrilled to announce the release of the audio book version of my Lambda Literary Award-winning anthology Sometimes She Lets Me: Best Butch/Femme Erotica. It’s available on Amazon and Audible (you can even listen to a sample at Audible). First, I am just excited that the audio book market has really exploded recently, and audio book versions of several of my books have already been produced, including Best Lesbian Erotica 2007, Best Lesbian Erotica 2009, Best of the Best Lesbian Erotica, Hot Lesbian Erotica, and Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships (and coming soon: Down and Dirty Sex Secrets!). I think erotica books make especially good material for audio (of course) and queer erotica is where I got my start so it’s close to my heart. But what makes this one extra special is that I co-produced and narrated it! That’s right, here’s your chance to hear more than 7 hours of me talking dirty to you, reading smutty stories by folks like S. Bear Bergman, Toni Amato, D. Alexandria, Peggy Munson, Sinclair Sexsmith, Elaine Miller, Amie M. Evans, Alison Smith, and more. You’ll hear tales of the new femme in town and the butch pastry chef, the cop who passes as a guy and picks up straight girls at hip hop clubs, porn-watching butches who can’t keep their hands off each other, a sexy game of hide and seek in the woods, what happens when a femme trolls the personals for a date, one girl’s revenge on sweet-talking butches, a threesome with a power couple, girl-on-girl lipstick smearing, poetic public sex and some particularly incendiary roleplay. The stories are filled with dominant Daddies, butches with swagger, fierce femmes, strippers and sex workers, longtime lovers, femme tops, and plenty more. I promise you: it’s a good time! My producer and engineer on this project is a superstar in his own right: Dylan Keefe. Dylan is part of the team of geniuses who work on public radio show Radiolab and the bass player for Marcy Playground, an awesome 90s band famous for the song “Sex and Candy.” Dylan and I had so much fun in the studio together recording this, and we hope to collaborate on more projects together. I hope you’ll check it out, tell your friends, and enjoy this porn for your ears!

  • I recently appeared on the podcast Afroerotik, along with Dr. Cherie Ann Turpin, to have an in-depth conversation about race and sexuality. We talked about the implications and effects of continued stereotypes and racism in the adult industry and the how it affects perceptions in society. If you missed it, go listen to it now!

Take it slow.  Talk to your partner.  And don’t forget, just because you start off with strap-on play, doesn’t mean you have to end there, also, just because you start with anything else, doesn’t mean you can’t end with strap-on play.

(Thanks Jen!)
